Probably not. I mean, different companies are going to have different expectations, and obviously different competition for you. There may be small companies out there that are willing to hire a PR Specialist with little training in the field. However, in general it's best to have a degree in something if you want to take it seriously as a career. Most large companies will look at resumes and be more impressed by those which have education in the field.
I am taking Communications in university and many people in my program are planning on going into public relations. There are also college courses specifically for public relations. The more education you have, the more likely you are to get hired, in general. You also have to have some good PR ideas.
Go on the web sites of universities and colleges in your area and look for communications or public relations in their lists of offered programs. If the media really interests you, communications will be a really interesting university program for you. I love it! Good luck!
