| am applying for an Administrative Assistant for a University that I attended. This is a salaried position. So I emailed a member of HR to follow up , she told me that the apps had been sent to the department for review this week. (this was mon or tues she emailed me back) 1) how long does it usually take them to call people for interviews at a place like this, considering thats the step its at? 2) I sent a follow up email reiterating my interest in the job to the manager of that particular dept where the job would be, there were two other "coordinators" listed but I did not email them. Was this right to do? I dont want to come off as pushy, ignorant, invasive or wasting their time. I got his email off the university website. What would you think if you got an email like this from an applicant? The job posting closed for applications on Tuesday Jan 19, and today is wed the 28th. Thanks! |

| As an employer, I would consider that the applicant is highly interested in the position and it would make them stand out against everyone else who is just a name on a piece of paper. There is no telling how long their hiring process is. If you decide to inquire further you might ask when they will be performing interviews or when they are looking to fill the position. This will show you have real interest and answers your questions so you're not left wondering. I don't think it's too pushy, but if you ever begin to get a vibe that you have become more of an annoyance than anything else, take a step back and give them space. You might want to ask them a good time to call about follow-up so they can expect your call. Again, I think you're better making inquiries by phone, rather than email. And, again, if you want to get this torture over with don't be afraid to ask for the interview! If you're deserving of the position and really want it, go after it! I have had jobs that I applied to and completely forgot about until I heard from them a year later and was no longer looking for employment. I have also had jobs where they hire me on the spot and everything in between. There aren't any strict rules when it comes to hiring. Good luck ....and don't put all your eggs in one basket! |
