sprint smartphones? data plan?

ok so i went to the sprint store today and was excited to upgrade my 2 year old phone. i got there and little did i know that i need a data plan to get the instinct/blackberry.

i was wondering if i get a used/unlocked blackberry/instinct, is it possible to activate it without data plan? i only need texting and calling i dont need internet.
