Default Entry Level Banking for a School Leaver?

Hey, I'm thinking about applying to work in a bank after Christmas. Currently I'm a waitress and feel like I need to start a career somewhere even if I don't know what it is I want to do with my life. I'm 18, left university because I was miserable there and don't want to go back as I don't think I can afford the debt.

Has anyone else gone into banking after A Levels? Or GCSEs? Where do they start you off and what's the work like? I'm interested in Retail/High Street banking over anything else.
I have NO experience in finance. The only job I've taken has been as a waitress out of desperation.

I got A in GCSE English and B in math.
I took ICT up to AS standard and English up to A2.

I'm not entirely sure this is what I want but I can't see many other options when I feel I want an office-y or retail job and I have no experience in that environment.

Also am I allowed to develop at my own pace or am I expected to try and rocket through the ranks?
