Default radiology certificate vs. majoring in the field-?

I'm considering majoring as a radiology technician. A friend informed me that instead of going to school for two whole years that I could get a certificate that would take a few months, get an actual job (so that I can start making money) and then they'd pay for my education if I wanted to further myself in that field.

First of all, i wanted to know if that is true.
Secondly, what's the difference in pay for a radiology technician who went to school for two years as opposed to one who just got the certificate?

thank you very much, guys!
