Default Is diagnostic cytology a good career option ? (Canadian cytologists preferred)?

Hi all,

I am at the last year of university and was considering going into a cytology career afterwards. So I was planning on applying to an accredited cytology program and go to work afterward as a cytologist.
But, I have been hearing two sides to what it is like to be a cytologist.
The lady I spoke to at the college offering the program said the field in Canada has become highly regulated. They focus on quality not quantity of slides and also said there is a need for cytologists despite the automation that is happening.
Then, there is a cytologist working for a private company who basically warned to stay away from cytology. She said it was a dying field where it was very hard to find jobs. She also said that the automation WAS having an impact and people WERE being laid off as a result. She also said there is little to no chance for career advancement.
So, I would love to hear from other Canadians familiar with cytology. How do I make sense of these two opposite view points. Which one of them is right and who am I supposed to believe ?
