Default Health Insurance Cancelled with no notice?

We pay part of insurance costs and employer pays part. Insurance was abruptly cancelled even though we've been paying our part.

Is this legal? It certainly seems unethical. Are we eligible for COBRA under these conditions?

We're very dependent on our insurance. What can we do? The company says it will be straightened out in a week, but that seems doubtful.
