Default accused of affair w/ supervisor by coworker.. is this legally sexual harrassment?

My Supervisor and I have been accused of having an affair by one of my co-workers. This is absolutely untrue. They have absolutely no proof. I believe this is happening because there was talk I would be getting a promotion. Is this ground for sexual harrassment? What can I legally do to end this. My supervisor is a married man with children. His job is on the line as is my moral character. what do i do?

This is not "sexual harassment." If the accuser is making verbal accusations it is "Slander" and if they did it in writing (i.e. e-mail) it is "liable." Both are forms of "defamation of character" and are almost certainly a violation of your companies HR policy.

I would report this matter to your HR dept immediately and file a complaint. The employee would most likely receive some form of discipline, up to and including possible termination.

If you feel that this person's actions actually prevents you from receiving the promotion or you suffered some other tangible negative impact from their behavior, you could also file a civil law suit. Some people even sue over "emotional distress" but I'm not sure how likely you are to win if that is the only "injury" that you suffered.

Only a lawyer can evaluate your situation and determine if it has any merit to move forward.

the legal term is "slander". Discuss the matter with an attorney, who specializes in defamation of character cases.

If you are fortunate enough to win your case, then you can collect from the culprit's homeowner's insurance. HO insurance provides coverage to people for "personal injury", which includes defamation of character through slander or libel.

Well document everything along with the co-worker in question and bring that to the attention of the person in charge of you both and advise them that the people in question need to stop this behavior sorry but you have to go through the chain of command to help you stop this activity against the both of you or document it show they have done nothing to help you.
