Default is it okay not to list previous jobs on a job application?

I feel like my job as a hostess is preventing me from getting a job in the retail field

If not listing a job will create a gap in your employment, it's better to list the job. If you have a gap in your employment, you'll need to explain it. If you lie and say you weren't working and the employer later finds out (even after you get the job) that you lied, that could cause you some trouble. It could be considered fraud.

If you think your job title is holding you back, you can massage the title somewhat. However, a better idea may be to include a cover letter with your job application showing how your work as a hostess makes you a great candidate for the retail positon you're seeking.

Good luck!

I don't know if I would consider it "okay", however it is usually not required that you list a job that would have nothing to do with the qualifications of a job you are currently looking for.

However, when the employer does checks they can see jobs you've held in the past, if you were fired, etc...
