What can be done, when your landlord has been illegally subleasing an apartment to you? We moved into a unit a couple months ago. We met with our "landlord" he took a damage deposit (we have all the receipts) and rent, and claimed there was no lease. So we've been living here a couple months. We decided it was a little pricy (we took the place out of desperation) and decided we would look into other places. Upon doing so we found out that the "landlord" wasn't part of the Property Owners at all. And an investigation by the Property Owner's ensued. On top of this the people downstairs are constantly filing noise complaints. We hear knocking from below sometimes even during silence, when I'm the only one awake and brushing my teeth before bed, for example. Claiming we throw parties at three in the morning, when neither of us have anyone over. Regardless, due to these complaints, and not being on the lease the property owners gave us two days to get out of the apartment. Is this legal?
What can be done about the fraudulent "landlord" we were dealing with?
EDIT: Not sure if this makes a difference but I am located in Canada. |
