Default do they have to pay tax for selling their stories?

People who sell their story to a magazine or newspaper, do they pay tax on their payment?

Such as a kiss and tell, or even a women commenting on a health problem for a magazine or a couple whose parrot can't stop swearing... yo know the sort of thing.

They get a fee for their story, but do they have to inform the tax man and give him a cut?
