Default Software engineer, tired of pay cuts and layoffs?

I've been a EDI specialist for 15 years, and after getting laid off from a job for 8 years, the next job offer was 30% less and they used salary surveys to support their offer; can't say I blame them but anyway.
Between outsourcing and companies seeing IT staff as being an expense of doing business and not generating revenue, corporate IT is simply taking advantage of the employers' market and low balling me into selling my house.

My question is, with a technical programming background and strong interpersonal skills, what career transition or business idea would you recommend that will turn things around. I love automating tasks, enjoy improving processes and troubleshooting. Any ideas?
